ABOUT THE ELECTIVES
Every student will select two (2) electives to participate in. We have partnered with Project 440 and the Collective Conservatory, to bring you the best possible programming. These nationally known programs provide exciting, innovative, and engaging experiences. These classes will only be open to YOBC students. Additionally, our virtual mini classes, led by YOBC faculty, will help our younger musicians gain a strong foundation in some important musical skills.

ELECTIVES FOR GRADE LEVELS 9 – 12

Collective Conservatory’s 10-Week Residency
Sundays 1:00 – 2:30pm
Program includes 10 sessions
September 20th – December 6th (see detailed schedule)
In this program, YOBC students will join their peers for an immersive, online music-making experience. Yes, this will include actually playing your instrument! Students will meet weekly with 25-30 other YOBC students to explore musical ideas, performance concepts, and group composition. Sessions will be led by two experienced teachers; students will also have access to a producer to assist with recording elements. Additionally, 10 guest artists will present during the residency, teaching relevant and creative skill development such as improvisation, building melody, mindfulness, and more. Teaching Artists include Daniel Trahey, creator of Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s “OrchKids” program, and Joseph Young, Artistic Director of Ensembles for the Peabody Conservatory and Resident Conductor of the National Youth Orchestra – USA.
The residency will culminate in a final creative product, which could look like a professionally produced track or tracks, an online performance, or a hybrid event (details to follow). Along the way, students will experience the community, creativity, and high-performance level that are so vital to all YOBC ensembles and projects. Doing Good – Social Entrepreneurship and Leadership for Musicians with Project 440
Sundays 3:00 – 5:00pm

This revolutionary program gives high school musicians the training and practical tools needed to positively impact their communities. The curriculum leads students to explore the fundamentals of social entrepreneurship and leadership, and identify needs, gaps, and opportunities that they are equipped to address. As part of the Doing Good program, students work in small groups to design their own community-based artistic projects, and then receive $500 in seed funding to actually implement them, under the guidance of experienced teaching artists. Students will learn new skills in marketing, budgeting, project management, and teamwork, and gain practical experience through their hands-on project. YOBC students will gain a heightened awareness of social responsibility and discover avenues for giving back as citizen-musicians. If you want to use your musical talents to make real change, this is for you!
Prepare for College – Instruments for Success Course with Project 440
Mondays 4:00 – 6:00pm
Program includes 10 sessions
September 14 – November 16
This is a general course – not just limited to students who are pursuing music
High school students are invited to join this career pathways course which covers every aspect of the college admissions and audition process. Students will spend 10 weeks with a highly experienced lead teacher, and 3 additional weeks learning from a series of guest speakers. Students will learn about selecting schools that are the right “fit” for their goals and interests, preparing for auditions and interviews, navigating the world of financial aid, grants, and scholarships, and much more! Participants will be learning along with a cohort of 25-30 other YOBC students. If you are looking for more information and direction on your college search, this is for you!

We all know how to get to Carnegie Hall…practice, practice, practice. But for many of us, practice is a grind that often doesn’t always make perfect. In this interactive workshop, we’ll help you get the most out of your practice time. We’ll help you sharpen your mental game, build and stick to a routine, and employ a number of strategies to maximize the minutes you spend honing your skills. Come bring your instrument and learn from YOBC conductor Emily Anastasi!
Virtual YOBC Mini-Class “New Music? No Problem!”
Sundays 3:45 – 4:45
Program includes 6 sessions
November 8th – December 13th
In the 6 sessions of “New Music? No Problem!” students will learn helpful strategies to apply when learning a brand-new piece of music. YOBC conductor Hannah Pak will share tips and tricks, and YOBC students will be able to play their instruments in these hands-on, interactive sessions. From clapping, to bowing, to putting it all together, learning new music effectively is crucial to becoming an advanced musician! If you want to feel confident when you are handed new pieces, whether they are solo, chamber, or ensemble, then this course is for you!
