School Participation Policy
effective April 8, 2014
YOBC is committed to supporting music education in our schools. As a signatory of the League of American Orchestra’s “Statement of Common Cause: Orchestras Support In-School Music Education” we recognize the value of music education and strive for partnerships with local school systems, and responsiveness to local, state, and national arts and academic standards. Our Students in Concert outreach program demonstrates our strong desire to see that effective school music programs exist in every public school district.
YOBC requires participation in a school-based instrumental music program, where such a program exists.
YOBC activities should be viewed as a supplement to, not a replacement for, school-based music education for students situated where such programs exist.
YOBC should not be seen as a viable alternative for music education by school boards and administrators looking for budget cuts.
YOBC reserves the right to contact schools to verify students’ participation.
Members of YOBC are expected to follow this policy. Any violations of this policy may lead to dismissal from YOBC.
Rare exceptions to the policy may be made, with the signed approval of the school music director. This process needs to be initiated by a parent. Furthermore, YOBC reserves the right to examine exceptional cases individually and, subject to its own Board discretion, may allow rare exemptions from the School Participation Policy.
